Freddie Tea is playing 62 Ebrington Street on Monday 27 July as part of Live music Monday. He's a singer-songwriter and guitarist, and the set is built around his loop pedal, which lets him layer parts on top of each other as he goes. It's a one-man show that sounds like more than one person on stage, so you get to see how the songs are put together in real time.
The set pulls from two different places. There are his own originals, the songs he writes himself, and a selection of covers — songs he's taken from other artists and reworked into his own style. He mixes the two throughout the night, so you'll hear his own material alongside some familiar names, and the loop pedal works the same way for both: he builds the rhythm and the harmony layer by layer before the vocals come in.
Because it's a loop-based set, the performance is as much about the process as the songs. You can hear the individual parts being laid down — a guitar line here, a beat there — before they lock together into a full sound. It's a good way to hear how a single performer can fill a room without a full band behind him.
