Plymouth Arts Cinema is hosting a Knitflix screening of Some Like it Hot on Saturday 11 July, and it's exactly what the name suggests. Knitflix is a relaxed cinema format where you can bring along your knitting, crochet, or other craft projects and work on them while you watch. The house lights are left on low, so you'll have enough light to see your stitches without ruining the film.
The movie on the bill is Some Like it Hot (1959), directed by Billy Wilder. It's a classic of the Silver Screen, and the plot is one of those that's easy to follow even if you're more focused on your needles than the screen. Two musicians, Joe and Jerry, find themselves on the run from the mob and decide to disguise themselves as women to blend in with an all-female jazz troupe. Once they're in, they both fall for the band's lead vocalist and ukulele player, Sugar Kane.
That's the role Marilyn Monroe takes, and she's the one most people remember the film for. She brings a lot of charm and vulnerability to Sugar, and her comedic timing holds its own alongside Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. The performance earned her a Golden Globe, and the chemistry between the three of them is a big part of why the comedy still works.
