Effi o Blaenau (15)

Effi o Blaenau runs at Plymouth Arts Cinema from Friday 24 July to Thursday 30 July, a Welsh-language film directed by Marc Evans. It's based on Gary Owen's one-woman play Iphigenia in Splott, and Evans has moved the story from the stage to the wide-open landscapes of North Wales.

That's where we meet Effi, a young woman desperate to get out of a town where the pubs have closed and the jobs have vanished, while her grandmother works night shifts in the local chip shop. A chance encounter in a Llandudno nightclub with Lee, an injured soldier played by Tom Rhys Harries, briefly opens a door to a better life. It's a story about wanting more than what's on your doorstep, and the kind of luck that can change everything in a single night.

Leisa Gwenllian takes the lead, and Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian described her performance as 'blistering'. She's joined by Tom Rhys Harries, Owen Alun, Nel Rhys Lewis, Mared Llywelyn, Sion Eifion, Carys Gwilym and Leah Gaffey. The film is in Welsh with English subtitles, so you'll get the original language without needing to know a word of it yourself.

The cinema is at Arts University Plymouth, 0 Tavistock Place, PL4 8AT. It runs for a full week from Friday 24 July to Thursday 30 July, so there's plenty of room to fit it in.
