Badgers

Badgers opens at Theatre Royal Plymouth on Wednesday 2 September, running through to Saturday 5 September. It's a new play by Malaika Kegode with music by Jakabol, produced by the venue in association with Bristol Old Vic. The show was commissioned by the theatre and developed on Complicité's Mudlarks International Residency, so it's had a proper run of development before it hits the stage here.

The story follows Meles, a podcaster whose career is stalling just as his mother is dying, who stumbles into something unfathomable. It's described as a play about folk tales, letting go and true crime, and the production itself is called shape-shifting and mercurial. The team behind it also did Outlier, so if that one rings a bell, this comes from the same stable.

It's been getting some strong notices before it reaches us. WhatsOnStage called it "a supremely impressive and incredibly moving new play," The Scotsman described it as "smart, vivid and searching," and The Stage praised it for its refusal to be categorised. It runs 70 minutes and is recommended for ages 12 and over.

There are five performances in total, all in The Drum: Wednesday 2, Thursday 3, and Friday 4 September at 7:45pm, with a 2:00pm matinee and a 7:45pm evening show on Saturday 5. Tickets start from £20, and there's unreserved seating on the ground floor or the balcony. If you need it, there's a BSL interpreted performance on Thursday 3 September and an audio described performance for the Saturday evening show.
