Free author talk by Kelly Yang, winner of the 2019 Asian Pacific American Award for Children's Literature, about her 'Front Desk' series.
Kelly Yang will be at the Frick Fine Arts Building on Thursday, October 22, for a talk presented by Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures. The session centers on her Front Desk series, which follows ten-year-old Mia Tang, who works the front desk of the Calivista Motel while her immigrant parents run the place and secretly shelter other immigrants. It's a story about family, immigration, and a kid doing a grown-up's job, and Yang will be talking through the work and the series that grew around it.
Yang is a New York Times bestselling, award-winning author who took home the 2019 Asian Pacific American Award for Children's Literature. Her own path is one of those things you have to hear to believe: born in China and raised in Los Angeles, she started college at 13, graduated from UC Berkeley at 17, and finished Harvard Law School at 20. Before she turned to novels, she wrote for the South China Morning Post, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic. She also founded The Kelly Yang Project, a writing and debating program for children in Asia.
