Guided walk led by Tree Pittsburgh to see fall foliage on campus and learn about the tree species, with limited spots and registration required.
Tree Pittsburgh is leading a fall foliage walk through the University of Pittsburgh's campus on Wednesday, October 28, starting from the Cathedral of Learning. There are two sessions to choose from: one from 1:00 to 2:00 PM and another from 3:00 to 4:00 PM. Both meet at the Cathedral's back patio facing Heinz Chapel, by the flagpole, at 4200 Fifth Ave.
Along the way, you'll learn about the different tree species on campus, why leaves change color in the autumn, and how to identify trees by looking at them. It's a guided tour, so you're not just walking through the colors on your own—you'll have someone from Tree Pittsburgh explaining what you're seeing as you go. Spots are limited, so you'll need to register in advance to get a place.
The walk is part of Campus Sustainability Month, which the university runs throughout October. It's an annual event hosted by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) to celebrate sustainability achievements in higher education. Pitt has been recycling since 1990 and is working toward cutting landfill waste by 25% from 2017 levels by 2030, while tracking its progress toward halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2037.

If you find yourself wanting to do more than just look at trees, Tree Pittsburgh also offers a free course to become a certified Tree Tender. It covers urban forestry, tree biology and health, pruning and maintenance, and how to lead community tree-planting efforts. The walk runs from 1:00 to 2:00 PM and 3:00 to 4:00 PM on Wednesday, October 28, at the Cathedral of Learning.
