Broadway musical The Sound of Music, directed by Jack O'Brien, with music and lyrics by Rodgers and Hammerstein, at the Benedum Center.
The Sound of Music opens at the Benedum Center on Wednesday, January 19, 2027, as part of the PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh season. It's one of the most enduring musicals in theatre history and the final show written by the legendary duo Rodgers and Hammerstein. The story follows Maria, an aspiring nun whose warmth, optimism and love of music transform the lives of the von Trapp family in the Austrian Alps. Along the way, the score produced some of the most recognizable songs in musical theatre: 'Do-Re-Mi', 'My Favorite Things', 'Edelweiss', 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain' and the title song.
It debuted in 1959 at The Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and won five Tonys, and its reputation was cemented by the Julie Andrews film adaptation. The story itself comes from the memoir of Maria, an Austrian governess, whose life was filmed in 1956 as Die Trapp-Familie. This production is directed by three-time Tony winner Jack O'Brien, who also helmed Hairspray. He's aiming to strip away some of the kitschy elements that have attached themselves to the show over the years. He points to 'Edelweiss' as an example: it was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, not a traditional Austrian folk song as is often assumed.
On stage, Cayleigh Capaldi plays Maria Rainer, with Kevin Earley as Captain Georg von Trapp. Christiane Noll takes on the Mother Abbess, Nicholas Rodriguez is Max Detweiler, Kate Loprest plays Elsa Schraeder, Ariana Ferch is Liesl von Trapp and Ian Coursey is Rolf Gruber. The music and lyrics are by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, with a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse.
