The 44th edition of the Three Rivers Film Festival, featuring film screenings, a Filmmaker Conference, script competitions, and a virtual reality exhibit.
The Three Rivers Film Festival returns to Pittsburgh from November 4 to 15, with screenings spread across the Harris Theater (Pittsburgh Cultural Trust), The Lindsay Theater in Sewickley, and Row House Hollywood in Dormont. This is the 44th edition of the festival, which Film Pittsburgh has run since 1982, making it the oldest and largest annual film festival in the region. It falls right in the middle of the fall circuit—New York, Toronto, and Venice—so it gives Pittsburghers an early look at some of the year's buzziest award contenders.
Opening night is the world premiere of Louder Than The Odds: The Mr. Smalls Story at Mr. Smalls Theatre. From there, the lineup includes I Play Rocky, directed by Peter Farrelly, along with Clarissa and Killing Castro by Eif Rivera. There's also the horror-focused Chiller Theater program hosted by Sean Collier and Shorts N'At, a short film showcase produced in partnership with WQED.
One thing that sets this festival apart is how it handles accessibility: every feature film is presented with open captions. Film Pittsburgh Executive Director Shanna Carrick says that's a move to ensure everyone can experience the magic of cinema in a theater. Beyond the screenings, the program includes the 6th annual Filmmaker Conference, a script competition, panels, and parties. There's also a virtual reality exhibit in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University's SONA Festival, which looks at how VR, AR, 360 video, and interactive media are expanding storytelling.
