Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of S.E. Hinton's novel and Francis Ford Coppola's film, set in 1960s Oklahoma.
The Outsiders opens at the Benedum Center on Wednesday, April 27, 2027, at 7:30 PM, and runs through Friday, May 7. It's the Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of S.E. Hinton's classic coming-of-age novel and Francis Ford Coppola's film, set in 1960s Oklahoma. The story follows Ponyboy Curtis and the conflict between the working-class Greasers and the wealthier Socs as they struggle with identity, loyalty, and belonging.
Behind the production is a full creative team: the book is by Adam Rapp and Justin Levine, with music and lyrics from Jamestown Revival, the duo of Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance. Choreography comes from Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman, and the show is directed by Tony Award winner Danya Taymor. It won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Musical, so it arrives in Pittsburgh with that pedigree behind it.
Before you book, there are a few practical things to keep in mind. The production runs 2 hours and 30 minutes with one intermission, and it's recommended for ages 10 and up. It includes scenes involving suicide, domestic abuse, and violence, as well as flashing lights, periods of darkness, loud noises, theatrical haze, and herbal cigarettes.
