Virtual lecture for members on the history and impact of the Carnegie International, the museum's 59th survey of international art.
The Carnegie Museum of Art is hosting a virtual lecture, The Future of Art History: Carnegie Internationals in Context, on Tuesday, November 10, from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. It's a members-only session, so you'll need a membership to join in.
The talk centers on the Carnegie International, the museum's longest-running survey of international art, which is now in its 59th iteration. The Carnegie has been exhibiting and collecting art of the moment since 1896—long before the term 'contemporary art' was even coined in the mid-20th century—which makes it one of the oldest museums in the country dedicated to it. The lecture looks at how the International has informed and transformed the museum's collection and its building over the decades.
One of the main threads is the shift in how the exhibition is put together: it moved from a jury system to embracing a curatorial vision, with a specific reference to the 1961 Pittsburgh International Exhibition of Contemporary Painting and Sculpture. If you've spent any time with the museum's permanent collection, it's a good way to see how the International has shaped what's on the walls.
