Free lecture by art historian Iftikhar Dadi on modern and contemporary art in South Asia, the annual Terry Smith Lecture in Contemporary Art.
Iftikhar Dadi gives a lecture at the Carnegie Museum of Art on Thursday, October 22, from 6 to 7:30 PM. The talk is part of the Terry Smith Lecture Series in Contemporary Art, which the museum co-presents with the University of Pittsburgh's Department of the History of Art and Architecture.
Dadi is drawing from his forthcoming book, Art in Lahore and Karachi: Between Modernism and Contemporaneity, and he'll be sharing his perspectives on the people, ideas, and histories that have shaped modern and contemporary art in South Asia. It's a look at two of the region's major cities and the art coming out of them, so if you've ever wondered about the scene there, this is a good place to start.
He's well-qualified to lead the conversation. Dadi is the John H. Burris Professor and Chair of Cornell University's Department of History of Art, and he's written Lahore Cinema: Between Realism and Fable (2022) and Modernism and the Art of Muslim South Asia (2010). He also edited The Lahore Biennale 01 Reader (2022) and collaborates with artist Elizabeth Dadi on projects exploring identity, borders, and migration.
