The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra presents Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with violinist James Ehnes and conductor Kevin John Edusei, part of the 'Next Stop' series.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra brings Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto to Heinz Hall on Saturday, November 7, with violinist James Ehnes taking the solo. It's part of the orchestra's 'Next Stop' series, and the evening pairs the concerto with Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustraβthe orchestral work most people recognize from the opening of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and more recently from the record-breaking Barbie.
Beyond the music, the night marks a first for the podium: conductor Kevin John Edusei makes his debut in Pittsburgh. He'll be leading the orchestra through both pieces, so the concerto and the Strauss share the same hand. If you're into the history behind the music, there's a separate note by Danny Riley, Josef Kotek and Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, which looks at the concerto itself and the musician who inspired it.
