Story time for early learners held under the dome of the Buhl Planetarium at the Kamin Science Center.
Story Time Under the Stars is at the Buhl Planetarium on Wednesday, October 28, a story time for early learners set under the stars. It's part of a series that runs through the fall and winter, with other dates on November 16, December 14, and December 21.
The Buhl Planetarium is Pittsburgh's only science planetarium, and it's a bit of a city landmark. It was established in 1939 by The Buhl Foundation in honor of philanthropist Henry Buhl Jr., and it's housed within the Kamin Science Center. The space is built around a 50-foot dome, and the panels were replaced with Spitz NanoSeam panels, running on Digistar 7 software and powered by a Sony 8K projection system across ten projectors. It's used for high-definition, full-dome space exploration programs and daytime laser shows.
There are a few accessibility features worth knowing about if you're bringing a little one. The planetarium has assistive listening devices and tactile star globes, which were funded by a $32,000 RAD grant. There's also an interactive feature called Free Flight, which you guide with an Xbox controller, along with wireless voting and daily space news from working observatories. The venue also stages Symphony of the Planets with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in partnership with WQED.
