Exhibition of watercolors by children's book illustrator Jerry Pinkney, organized into the sections Soul, Sound and Voice.
The Frick Pittsburgh is bringing a major Jerry Pinkney exhibition to the city early next year. Soul, Sound & Voice opens February 6, 2027, and runs through May 9, 2027. Pinkney (1939–2021) was one of America's great illustrators and a virtuosic watercolorist, and since he was born and raised in Pennsylvania, this feels like a homecoming for his work.
He spent more than five decades illustrating over 100 children's books, including award winners like The Lion & the Mouse and The Little Mermaid. But he didn't just work in children's literature; he also painted iconic album covers, posters, and magazine illustrations of figures like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Ma Rainey, and Pittsburgh legend Roy Eldridge. He's revered alongside watercolorists like Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent for bringing an exceptional technique to popular media.
The show is organized into three sections—Soul, Sound, and Voice—and honors his work to diversify children's literature and inspire future generations. It's presented by Woodmere and The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Terra Foundation for American Art.
