Free in-person workshop for multilingual learners on the social mechanics of casual American conversation, held at Posner Hall.
Small Talk for Multilingual Learners is happening at Posner Hall on Monday, October 19. It's an in-person workshop that takes a look at the social mechanics of casual conversation in the US, and this particular session asks the question: Why does everyone talk about the weather?
If you've spent any time in the States, you've probably noticed how often the weather comes up. It's one of those things that can feel like a weird cultural quirk when you're not used to it, and that's exactly where the workshop starts. The session is built around four learning objectives. First, you'll look at why small talk matters in the American communication style—the role it plays in starting a conversation and keeping it going. Then, you'll explore the general expectations of casual conversation in US culture, the unspoken rules that shape how people talk to each other in low-stakes settings. From there, you'll practice strategies for taking part successfully, and you'll review the useful language that typically carries these exchanges—the phrases and turns of phrase that actually make up the bulk of a small-talk conversation.
It's a practical session, so you'll be doing more than just listening. You'll get to work through these ideas and try out the language yourself, rather than just hearing about how it works. If you've ever felt a bit stuck when the conversation turns to the forecast, or if you're just curious about the social gears turning behind a typical American greeting, this is a good place to figure it out.
