Public ground mural by Sharmistha Ray painted on the pickleball courts of Arts Landing, merging game-design logic with abstract painting.
Sharmistha Ray brings Geometry of Play to Arts Landing starting Thursday, April 23, 2030, and running through Sunday, June 30. It's a ground mural commissioned for the pickleball courts, painted directly onto the playing surface, which turns the courts into a visual landscape that blends game-design logic with the fluidity of abstract painting. Interlocking patterns of circles, triangles, and grids reference kaleidoscopic mandalas and architectural ornamentation while echoing the rules and rhythms of the game. Ray treats abstraction as a spatial and cultural gesture of joy, inclusion, and shared encounters across identities, generations, and modes of seeing.
Ray is an artist, writer, and educator whose interdisciplinary practice spans painting, drawing, installation, and public art. Born in Kolkata and raised in Kuwait before moving to the United States, their work draws on South Asian visual traditions to engage contemporary dialogues around culture, queerness, and identity. They're a founding member of the feminist artist collective Hilma's Ghost and currently teach at Carnegie Mellon University.
