Pittsburgh Opera's production of Gounod's Romeo and Juliet, sung in French with English supertitles, with a Sunday matinee.
Pittsburgh Opera brings Gounod's Romeo & Juliet to the Benedum Center this spring, part of their 2026-27 season. It's the Shakespeare story you know—the feuding Montagues and Capulets—set to Charles Gounod's French score, with a libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré. The production is presented by Daniel G. and Carole L. Kamin.
On stage, Oreste Cosimo takes the role of Romeo and Lydia Katarina sings Juliet, with Erik Nordstrom as Mercutio and Matt Boehler as Friar Lawrence. Antony Walker conducts. The opera is sung in French with English supertitles, so you can follow the story even if you don't speak the language. It runs about 2 hours and 37 minutes with one intermission.
There's a bit of behind-the-scenes history to the production: the scenery and costumes were built at the Minnesota Opera Shops and Cincinnati Opera, and the two houses own them together. It's a shared set that travels between companies, rather than something built from scratch for one city.
