Pittsburgh Opera's premiere of Gluck's 'Orpheus & Eurydice' with Berlioz's instrumentation, sung in French with English supertitles.
Pittsburgh Opera brings Gluck's Orpheus & Eurydice to the Byham Theater downtown this November, and it's a Pittsburgh premiere. The production is part of the company's 2026-27 season, with three performances: Saturday, Nov. 14 at 7 PM; Friday, Nov. 20 at 7 PM; and a Sunday matinee, Nov. 22 at 2 PM.
If the story sounds familiar, that's because it's one of the great Greek myths: Orpheus descends into the Underworld to bring back his wife, Eurydice, who was bitten by a snake. It's the same tale that inspired the Broadway hit Hadestown, though this version is sung in French with English supertitles. The opera was first staged in 1774, but the version we'll hear here uses the instrumentation by Hector Berlioz from 1859, with a libretto by Pierre-Louis Moline.
On stage, Stephanie Doche takes the role of Orpheus, Lauren Snouffer sings Eurydice, and Léa Nayak is Amore. Antony Walker conducts the orchestra, and José Maria Condemi directs the staging. The performance runs about two hours with one intermission.
