The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kahchun Wong with violinist Francesca Dego, plays Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra brings Pictures at an Exhibition to Heinz Hall on Friday, January 15, 2027. It's a program that stays true to the title: Modest Mussorgsky's suite, written as a series of musical impressions of paintings in an exhibition, performed by the full orchestra.
Leading the ensemble is conductor Kahchun Wong, and the evening features violinist Francesca Dego. Having a soloist on the program adds another layer to a piece that's usually all orchestra, so there's a bit more to look forward to than just the standard reading. If you're not familiar with the work, it's one of those pieces that's easy to get intoβit's built from distinct movements, each meant to evoke a different image, so it moves through a few different moods rather than sticking to one.
Heinz Hall is the orchestra's home, right in the middle of the Cultural District and the Golden Triangle. It opened in 1971 and went through a renovation in 1995, and it holds 2,661 seats. It's a big room, and it's the main stage for the PSO's season, so this is where you'll find them for their larger orchestral programs.
