Intimate candlelight concert with two pianists playing Rachmaninoff, Saint-Saëns, Bach and Liszt around thousands of LED candles.
Jimmy Liu and Kevin Lee Sun are playing Duquesne University PNC Recital Hall on Saturday, October 17, as part of Piano Lumière: Halloween, a candlelight concert presented by Presto Piano Studio LLC. The show runs about 75 minutes, and there's a second performance the next day, Sunday, October 18, at 3 PM.
The setup is what gives the evening its name: the pianos are surrounded by thousands of glowing LED candles, and the program leans into the season's darker side. You'll hear Rachmaninoff's Tarantella, Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre, and Bach's Toccata. The centerpiece is a rare three-piano arrangement of Liszt's Totentanz, a piece that takes its title from the Latin for "dance of the dead," and there are a few surprises mixed in.
Liu and Sun lead the bill, but they aren't alone on stage. Youth pianist Thomas Ngan joins them, and guest performers Nathália Kato Giordano and Zoey Wolfe also appear throughout the program. The music is played on two and three pianos, so the sound fills the room in a way a single piano doesn't.
