Evening of live opera performances and wine pairings with Pittsburgh Opera's Resident Artists, plus a behind-the-scenes look at the production of Orpheus & Eurydice.
Pittsburgh Opera is opening up the Bitz Opera Factory on Friday, October 23, for Sip & Sing, part of their Outside the Salon series. It runs from 6 PM to 9 PM, and the whole thing takes place in the Hahn Rehearsal Hall and the Costume Shop—two spaces that aren't usually open to the public.
The night is built around the company's Resident Artists, who'll be performing live throughout the evening. The music is paired with wine, and the two run side by side: the opera is treated as a language of region and craft carried across borders by voice and body, with wine serving as its parallel. Between the performances, you get a rare look at how a production actually comes together. The focus is Orpheus & Eurydice, which is making its Pittsburgh premiere, and the backstage access lets you watch the set take shape, create a costume piece, contribute to a community art piece, and go behind the curtain. It's a chance to see the work that happens before the lights go up.
Sip & Sing is one of several events in the Outside the Salon series, which takes the company out of the traditional theater and into these working spaces. It's a different way to experience the company than sitting in a seat at the Benedum Center, where they're opening their 88th season with Verdi's Rigoletto—the first time that production has been staged there in 14 years.
