Free and open-to-the-public masterclass by the Banff International String Quartet Competition winner Daedalus Quartet at Carnegie Mellon University.
The Daedalus Quartet are in town for a residency at Carnegie Mellon University from October 23 to 26, and the public part of that visit is a recital at the Kresge Theatre on Saturday, October 24, at 7:30 PM. The quartet is made up of Min-Young Kim and Matilda Kaul on violin, Jessica Thompson on viola, and Angela Park on cello.
They've been around for a while and have played some of the biggest stages in the classical world—Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress, Vienna's Musikverein, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Cité de la Musique in Paris. They first made a name for themselves by winning the top prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition, and The New Yorker has described them as "a fresh and vital young participant in what is a golden age of American string quartets."
They're as interested in new music as they are in the standard repertoire. They've commissioned contemporary works from Fred Lerdahl, Joan Tower, Huck Hodge, David Horne, and Vivian Fung, and since 2006 they've served as Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Pennsylvania. That residency has produced projects like their Beethoven Quartet cycle Music and Migration and Hearing Women's Voices.
