World premiere solo dance piece by Maree ReMalia that blends dance, storytelling and pop music in a 'karaoke-funeral-lounge' to explore grief and memory.
Maree ReMalia brings With Ourselves, With Each Other to Kelly Strayhorn Theater on Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24. It's a solo performance that blends dance, storytelling, and pop music, and it's being co-presented by KST and Hatch Arts Collective.
ReMalia is a Korean adoptee and a ballerina turned experimental dance maker. She built this piece with Hatch Arts Collective and co-director Adil Mansoor, a Pittsburgh director and founding member of the collective. The work is set in what she calls a "karaoke-funeral-lounge," and it centers on the grief of losing the parent who raised her and the absence of the parent she never met. She draws on the spectacle of karaoke, the ceremonial weight of funerals, and the intimacy of a neighborhood lounge, and she invites the audience to sing along and inhabit their own multitudes. It's her way of asking how we carry grief and memory while still reaching for joy.
This is the world premiere, and it's come out of a few different places. It was an NPN Creation & Development Fund project co-commissioned by KST, Bates Dance Festival, Hatch, and the National Performance Network, and it received a National Dance Project Production Grant. The run also includes a community dinner with ReMalia and Acts of Remembrance, which she's doing with composer David Bernabo.
