Free public lecture by artist Kearra Amaya Gopee on their work in 'If the word we', part of the 59th Carnegie International.
Kearra Amaya Gopee will give a lecture at the Carnegie Museum of Art on Tuesday, November 3, from 5:30 to 7 PM. It's part of the Carnegie Mellon University School of Art Visiting Artist Lecture Series, and the talk will draw on the work Gopee has in If the word we, a section of the 59th Carnegie International—the museum's longest-running international exhibition, which returns every four years.
Gopee is an anti-disciplinary artist and facilitator who works across video, sculpture, sound, and writing. They describe violence and time as the primary conditions undergirding the anti-Black world they inhabit, and that's the ground their work returns to. Born in Miami in 1994 and raised in Carapichaima, Kairi, Trinidad and Tobago, they now live and work in New York.
Their CV reads like a map of the last few years of the art world. They've shown at documenta 15 in Kassel (2022) and at The Kitchen in New York. They've held residencies at Skowhegan, the International Studio and Curatorial Program, Headlands Center for the Arts, and NLS Kingston, and have received fellowships from MacDowell, the Leslie Lohman Museum, Queer|Art, and the Global Fund for Women. More recently, they were an Elaine G. Weitzen Fellow at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in 2024 and an artist in residence at MASS MoCA in 2025. They hold an MFA from UCLA and a BFA in photography and imaging from NYU.
