Ceremonial one-mile rickshaw walk by artist Cecil McDonald, Jr. through Homewood to open his survey exhibition 'The American Beauty'.
Cecil McDonald, Jr. brings Joy Ride: An Odyssey in Black to ALMA | LEWIS on Saturday, October 24, from 3 PM to 4 PM. It's a human-powered rickshaw performance—a one-mile ceremonial walk through the Homewood neighborhood—and it serves as the opening for Cecil McDonald, Jr.: The American Beauty, the first U.S. survey exhibition of his work.
McDonald is a Chicago-based artist, born in 1965, and the walk itself is a live piece: spoken word, drumming, and durational movement. The exhibition it opens is curated by Kilolo Luckett, Executive Director and Chief Curator of ALMA | LEWIS, and spans more than two decades of photography, video, dance, and performance. Throughout the show, McDonald explores the intersections of masculinity, family, and the artistic and intellectual pursuits of Black culture.
One of the centerpieces is the video installation Praise House: We All Shine, in which McDonald reimagines an antebellum structure as a utopian space of healing, inspiration, and creativity. The walk is part of the gallery's Grand Reopening Weekend, which also names writer and scholar Sharbreon Plummer and sculptor Layo Bright as inaugural Artist Fellows.
