Concert by folk singer-songwriters Joe Pug and Willie Watson at City Winery on Smallman Street.
Joe Pug and Willie Watson are playing City Winery on Sunday, October 25, with the show running from 7 PM to 10 PM. It's a double bill that puts two folk songwriters on the same stage, and if you're not familiar with Pug, he's a good place to start.
Pug first made a name for himself with his 2008 debut, Nation of Heat, and its opening track, "Hymn #101," which became an early calling card. From there, his harmonica and his way of writing lyrics that notice the small things carried through albums like The Great Despiser and Windfall. In 2022, he went back to that debut and re-recorded it as a full-band album, bringing in musicians from The Killers and My Morning Jacket to flesh out the songs. So, depending on what he pulls from, you might hear those early tunes in their original stripped-down form or as they sound on the later version.
Outside of his own records, Pug hosts The Working Songwriter podcast, where he sits down with other songwriters to talk about how they actually put their songs together. It's a bit of a window into how he thinks about the craft, and it's the same kind of thing he brings to his own writing.
