Cineconcert pairing Frank Capra's 'It's a Wonderful Life' on screen with Dimitri Tiomkin's score performed live by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is bringing It's a Wonderful Life to Heinz Hall on Wednesday, December 16, for a CineConcerts presentation. The evening pairs Frank Capra's holiday classic on the big screen with Dimitri Tiomkin's film score performed live by the full orchestra, with Jacob Joyce conducting.
If you've seen the movie before, you know the story by heart, but hearing the score live changes the experience. Tiomkin's music runs through the whole film, and having a full symphonic orchestra play it in the room rather than hearing it through the movie's speakers gives the score a physical presence. The orchestra follows the action on screen, so the music hits the same cues you're used to, just with the full sound of the PSO behind it.
It's a CineConcerts production, which means the film runs on the screen while the orchestra plays along in the hall. The movie is It's a Wonderful Life, the 1946 Capra classic about George Bailey, and the music is Dimitri Tiomkin's original score. Jacob Joyce leads the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for the performance.
