Tony Award-winning musical that reimagines the Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice through folk, jazz and blues.
Hadestown is playing the Benedum Center at 237 7th St in downtown Pittsburgh, with performances running from Thursday, October 29 through Tuesday, November 3. It's the Tony Award-winning musical by singer-songwriter AnaĂŻs Mitchell and director Rachel Chavkin, which took home eight 2019 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the 2020 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
The show reimagines the ancient Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice through a modern blend of folk, jazz, blues, and theatrical storytelling. It's set in a hauntingly atmospheric world that looks at love, sacrifice, hope, and the struggle between freedom and control. The music is a big part of it—folk and blues textures rather than a traditional Broadway sound—and the lyrics have a poetic quality that carries the story. It's been one of the most acclaimed contemporary musicals on Broadway and on tour, and its tagline is "where a song can change your fate."
If you're not familiar with the story, it's the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice retold: the musician who descends into the underworld to bring back the woman he loves, and the deal he makes with Hades to do it. The production is known for its emotionally powerful music and visually striking stage design, which together build that atmospheric world the show is so often described by. It's a story about hope and the things people are willing to risk for love, told with a sound that leans more toward the folk and jazz end of the spectrum than the typical musical.
