Free book launch of Njaimeh Njie's photobook 'Flight Plans' with a conversation with the artist.
Njaimeh Njie is launching her new photobook, Flight Plans, at Silver Eye Center for Photography on Thursday, October 29, from 6 to 7 PM. The evening is built around the book itself, with a conversation with the artist to go along with it.
Flight Plans was published by Carlow University and grew out of Njie's 2023 project and solo exhibition at the Carlow University Art Gallery. It's a bit of a hybrid—part collage series, part installation—and it weaves together historical research, family storytelling, documentary photography, collage, original prose, and process documentation. The whole thing works as a meditation on flight as freedom.
Njie was born in Pittsburgh in 1988 and works across photography, filmmaking, collage, and installation. Her work looks at how people build identity and community when the places and times around them are shifting. She's shown at the Mattress Factory and Silver Eye, and has presented at TEDxPittsburgh Women, Brown University, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Carnegie Museum of Art, and you can see it on display at the Pittsburgh International Airport. She's also the founder and lead producer of the documentary storytelling company Eleven Stanley Productions, and she earned her B.A. in Film and Media Studies from Washington University in St. Louis in 2010.
