Free book launch with artist Taylor Galloway, including a talk and screening of his short film, celebrating his monograph 'across the street from Heaven'.
Taylor Galloway is at Silver Eye Center for Photography on Friday, October 30, from 7 to 8 PM to launch his first monograph, across the street from Heaven. The evening runs as a talk and a screening of his short film, You Know I'd Come Looking, which is described as an exploration of gesture. The book comes out this year from Deadbeat Club.
For ten years, Galloway returned to the farm his grandmother's family has tended for five generations in Hartwood, Virginia. The photographs that make up the book form a chorus of faces and voices whose lives have unfolded on that land, bearing witness to a way of life on the brink of disappearance as small independent farms across America give way to industrial agriculture and development. Galloway describes the work as both testimony and elegy on time, memory and belonging.
Based in Los Angeles, Galloway centers his practice on internal history, identity and the shifting nature of memory, often reimagining family archives and domestic spaces. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and published in The New York Times.
