Free public art installation of three sculptures by Pittsburgh artist Darian Johnson, a collaboration between the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and VaultArt Studio.
Darian Johnson brings Western Pennsylvania Animals to Arts Landing starting Wednesday, April 29, and it runs through Saturday, May 31. The exhibition consists of three sculptures of native wildlife, and it's a collaboration between the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and VaultArt Studio, a project of Achieva.
Johnson is a Pittsburgh-based painter, sculptor, and illustrator, and a resident artist at VaultArt Studio, a nationally recognized platform dedicated to elevating the work of artists with disabilities. The Trust presents the installation as an affirmation that public space must reflect the full spectrum of human experience, including the perspective of artists with disabilities.
These three sculptures focus on native wildlife, which draws on Johnson's long-standing interest in the physical environments of the region. It's a bit of a shift from what he's usually known for—the intricate painted cityscapes, whimsical 'I Spy' compositions, and expressive animal figures that make up much of his other work. Here, the focus is on the animals and the landscape they come from.
