Grand reopening party with drinks, food by Black Radish Kitchen, DJ music and a private preview of the exhibition 'Cecil McDonald, Jr: The American Beauty'.
ALMA | LEWIS is reopening its doors in Pittsburgh's East End on Friday, October 23, with a party that doubles as a first look at its new space. The contemporary arts center has tripled its footprint and doubled its exhibition area, adding new artist studios and a street-front entrance. The expansion also grows The Black Archive, the organization's non-circulating research collection of books, exhibition catalogues, ephemera and artworks centered on Black arts, culture and history.
The night is built around a private preview of Cecil McDonald, Jr: The American Beauty, the space's first survey exhibition. McDonald is a Chicago artist whose photography and time-based work reflect on Black domestic life, masculinity and performance. The show is curated by Kilolo Luckett and runs through March 6, 2027, so this is your first chance to see it. Along with the preview, you can visit the studios of inaugural artist fellows Layo Bright and Sharbreon Plummer, and honorary artists Stephen Towns and Murjoni Merriweather are also named.
On the hospitality side, Allora Wine Group is handling drinks and Black Radish Kitchen is providing food, curated by chefs Kate Romane and Tunde Wey. DJ Nate Da Barber will be on the decks. Proceeds from the party go toward free public programs, community engagement, exhibitions, The Black Archive and the artist fellowships that bring early-to-mid-career artists to Pittsburgh.
