Concert by alto saxophonist Chris Potter, a leading light of contemporary jazz, at City Winery Pittsburgh.
Chris Potter plays City Winery Pittsburgh on Tuesday, October 20, at 5 PM. He's a world-class alto saxophonist, composer, and bandleader, and this is a straight-ahead jazz date with him as the main feature.
If you're not already familiar with his name, the industry certainly is. Down Beat called him one of the most studied and copied saxophonists on the planet, and Dave Liebman described him as one of the best musicians around. He's a Chicago native, born in 1971, who picked up the alto sax at 10 and played his first gig at 13. He moved to New York at 18 to study at the New School and Manhattan School of Music, and he burst onto the scene in 1989 as an 18-year-old prodigy playing with bebop icon Red Rodney. Since then, he's worked with jazz giants like Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, John Scofield, Jim Hall, and Paul Motian.
His career has a few distinctions that stand out: he was the youngest musician ever to win Denmark's Jazzpar Prize, and in Down Beat's 2008 Readers Poll, he was voted second only to Sonny Rollins. His discography runs to 15 albums as a leader and sideman appearances on more than 100 others, so he's as much a part of the records as he is of the stage.
