Free museum of historic carriages and early automobiles at the Frick estate in Clayton, exploring Pittsburgh's role in the automobile industry.
The Car and Carriage Museum is open at The Frick Pittsburgh on Wednesday, October 21, from 10 AM to 5 PM. It's part of the larger Frick estate, a Gilded Age museum and home that's free to visit.
The museum houses a collection of historic carriages and automobiles dating back to the turn of the 20th century. You can walk back to the era of horse-drawn carriages, see some of the first horseless carriages that made an impact on Pittsburgh, and learn about the city's role in the developing automobile industry. It's a look at the transition from one to the other, and how Pittsburgh fit into that shift.
The museum is set in Clayton, Henry Clay Frick's 1892 house. The wider estate includes the Frick Art Museum and an active greenhouse, a renovation and partial reconstruction of one that served the Frick family from 1897 through the 1970s. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions alongside the permanent collection.
