Free museum of historic carriages and automobiles from the turn of the 20th century on the Frick estate in Point Breeze.
The Car and Carriage Museum is open at The Frick Pittsburgh in Point Breeze, and it's a good place to spend a Saturday morning or afternoon. The museum draws on the Frick's collection of historic carriages and automobiles dating back to the turn of the 20th century, all housed on the same estate that preserves the legacy of Henry Clay Frick and the Gilded Age.
Inside, you can travel back to the era of horse-drawn carriages and see some of the first horseless carriages that left their mark on Pittsburgh. It's a chance to see how the city played a role in the developing automobile industry, and to get a sense of how quickly transportation shifted from horses to engines. The collection spans that transition, from the carriages that defined the late 19th century to the early cars that eventually replaced them.
The museum doesn't sit alone on the grounds. It's right alongside the Frick Art Museum, which hangs historic and contemporary painting and decorative arts alongside traveling exhibitions, and the Duquesne SoundWalk, a multisensory installation that brings the sights and sounds of Frick history to life. If you're already there for one, it's easy to walk over to the others.
