Free coding sprint to practice using AI more confidently and responsibly, part of Carnegie Mellon University's AI Fluency Week.
AI Fluency Week is holding its Vibe Code Sprint at the Hunt Library, IDeATe Studio A, on Friday, October 30, from 5 to 8 PM. It's a coding sprint, so you'll be spending the evening working with AI in a hands-on way rather than just listening to someone talk about it.
The sprint is part of AI Fluency Week, which is built around an award-winning initiative from the Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar Library, AI²@CMU-Q. That original program combined practical guidance for responsible AI use with workshops, panel discussions and student activities, and it picked up the American Library Association's Library of the Future Award. The week is designed to help students use AI more confidently and responsibly—exercising judgment about when to rely on it, how to evaluate its output and how to use it thoughtfully and with integrity—through hands-on practice and conversations with faculty and researchers.
That's the context the sprint sits in, and it's a good one to keep in mind: the whole point isn't just to get AI to do the work for you, but to figure out how to use it as a tool without losing your own judgment in the process. If you've been playing around with AI and want to get a bit more rigorous about how you're using it, this is exactly the kind of thing that helps you move from just poking at it to actually understanding how to work with it. The sprint format means you'll be doing that work in real time, with other people around you doing the same.
