After-hours night of Japanese folklore with themed displays, performances, cultural activities and food inspired by yokai at the Japanese Friendship Garden.
Yokai Night takes over the Japanese Friendship Garden on Friday, October 30, from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM. It's a ticketed event that turns the garden into a celebration of Japanese folklore after dark, and it's open to all ages, so you can bring the kids along.
If you've never heard the term, yokai are the supernatural beings of Japanese legend. The night is built around them: you walk the grounds and run into themed displays, live performances, cultural activities, and food inspired by these spirits. It's less of a formal exhibition and more of a walk-through, with the garden itself serving as the backdrop.
There's a lot of history behind the theme. Yokai go back more than a thousand years, starting in Japan's oral traditions and later appearing in illustrated scrolls, literature, and woodblock prints during the Edo period, from 1603 to 1868. They cover a wide range, too—playful tricksters, protective spirits, eerie ghosts, and full-on monsters. For centuries, they were used to explain the unexplained, teach moral lessons, or just entertain through storytelling.

That's the same spirit the evening draws on. You'll find the displays and activities scattered throughout the garden, with the performances and food filling in the gaps. It's a good way to spend a Friday evening in downtown Phoenix, especially if you're into folklore or just want to see the garden in a different light. Tickets run from $20 to $30, and the whole thing runs from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM at the Japanese Friendship Garden, 1125 N 3rd Ave.
