Concert by the Chicago instrumental trio Russian Circles, with Primitive Man, at Walter Studios.
Russian Circles play Walter Studios on Monday, November 9, with Primitive Man opening. It's a Chicago trio that works without a singer, and the whole thing is built around drums, bass, and guitar. Brian Cook, Mike Sullivan, and Dave Turncrantz are the three behind it.
They describe their sound as spanning drone-heavy meditations, prog exercises, riff-fests, folk ballads, and noise rock. That's a wide range to cover in one setβthe drone and the noise rock sit at opposite ends of the spectrum, and the folk ballads are a far cry from the prog exercises. Hearing them all in one night gives you a good sense of how they move between those different modes.
Primitive Man opens the bill, so the night starts with two acts that both lean into the heavier, louder side of things. Between the two, you've got a full evening of instrumental and heavy music.
