Ballet Arizona's Romeo & Juliet, set to Prokofiev's score and performed live by The Phoenix Symphony, as part of the company's 40th anniversary season.
Ballet Arizona brings Romeo & Juliet to Symphony Hall starting Thursday, October 22, for a run of six performances through Sunday, October 25. It's a production choreographed by Artistic Director Emeritus Ib Andersen, and it's being billed as one of his greatest works. The story is the one you know—the Shakespearean tragedy of the feuding Capulets and Montagues—set to the full score by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, performed live by The Phoenix Symphony.
On stage, the production moves through the different moods of the story: regal ballroom scenes, vivid swordplay, and poignant pas de deux. It follows the two lovers from their first youthful romance through to the devastating loss that makes the story a classic. The live orchestra is a big part of the experience here—Prokofiev's score is performed by The Phoenix Symphony right there in the hall, rather than recorded.
This run is part of Ballet Arizona's 40th anniversary season, and there are a couple of ways to get closer to the company beyond the main stage. One is a Studio Spotlight, an intimate one-hour rehearsal with company dancer Daniela Cardim and the corps de ballet held backstage at the Dorrance Theatre, with time for a Q&A. There are also free Performance Chat Q&As with the company dancers.
