Kishi Bashi performs his album 'Sonderlust' in full on his 10th anniversary tour, featuring vintage synths and warmer textures.
Kishi Bashi plays the Crescent Ballroom on Wednesday, October 21, as part of his Sonderlust 10th Anniversary Tour. He's performing the album in full, which is a bit of a rarity for a tour—usually you get a handful of old songs mixed in with new material, but here the whole record takes center stage.
Sonderlust came out ten years ago, and the story behind it is one that sticks. Bashi wrote it coming out of a period of creative and personal exhaustion, and you can hear that shift in the music. Before this, he was known for those ornate violin loops he builds on the fly, but Sonderlust moved away from that toward vintage synths, warmer textures, and a more open vulnerability. It's a record that trades the intricate layering for something a bit more direct and human.
To mark the anniversary, there's a new edition of the album out through Joyful Noise Recordings. It adds two previously unreleased B-sides, "Comin' To You" and "Harpsi Chords," along with demos of all ten album tracks and a reimagined cover by artist Ssin Kim. If you've only ever heard the original, those demos give you a look at how the songs started before they were polished into the versions we know.
