Helado Negro and Reyna Tropical play Crescent Ballroom as 'Helado Tropical'.
Helado Negro and Reyna Tropical are playing together as Helado Tropical at the Crescent Ballroom on Sunday, November 8. It's a collaboration between two artists who usually hold their own separate spaces, so seeing them share a stage under one name is the whole point of the night.
Helado Negro is the experimental electronic moniker of Roberto Carlos Lange, a producer of Ecuadorian heritage born in South Florida in 1980 to immigrant parents. He produces, engineers, and mixes his own songs, and he brings a background in computer art and animation from the Savannah College of Art and Design into the music, working across video, sculpture, sound, and performance. He made his album debut in 2009 with Awe Owe on Asthmatic Kitty Records, after years of releasing music under other names like ROM, Epstein, and Boom & Birds, and collaborating with Guillermo Scott Herren on Prefuse 73 releases and with Savath + Savalas.
Since then, his discography as Helado Negro has grown to include Canta Lechuza (2011), Invisible Life (2013), Double Youth (2014), Private Energy (2016), This Is How You Smile (2019), and Far In (2021). He's received a United States Artist fellowship and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts grant, and he lives in Asheville, NC. Reyna Tropical joins him for this run, and the two are billing the collaboration as Helado Tropical.
