Fundraising event with Joel Sartore, featuring a presentation, animal encounters and a curated exhibition at the Phoenix Zoo.
Joel Sartore is coming to the Phoenix Zoo on Friday, October 16, for a fundraising evening that puts his work and the zoo's animals in the same room. The night runs from 5:30 to 8:30 PM, and the main draw is a presentation by Sartore himself, with music provided by Joe Watkins, Marilyn Manwaring, Anne Palmer, Sonja Jones, Susan Morris, and Joe Robertson.
If you're not familiar with him, Sartore is an award-winning photographer, speaker, author, and conservationist. He was named National Geographic Explorer of the Year in 2018 and is a regular contributor to National Geographic magazine. He's the founder of the Photo Ark, a 25-year documentary project with a massive goal: to photograph every species living in zoos, aquariums, and wildlife sanctuaries, and to use those images to inspire action to protect wildlife and their habitats. The project is also the subject of the television series RARE.
His images of endangered species and landscapes are on display at the Zoo's Savanna Gallery as part of the Art on the Wild Side program, so you can see the work up close before or after the presentation. The evening's proceeds go to the Doornbos Animal Rescue and Care Center, a facility that houses wildlife rescued from the illegal animal trafficking trade and provides quarantine space, medical treatment, and care for confiscated animals.
