A living butterfly exhibit featuring thousands of free-flying Southwestern butterflies and the Glass in Flight sculpture series by Alex Heveri.
Fall Butterflies is running at the Desert Botanical Garden now through November 15, open daily from 9:30 AM to 5 PM. It's a living exhibit that lets you get close to thousands of free-flying Southwestern butterflies, and you can follow each stage of their life cycle while picking up some practical ideas on how to protect them.
The display centers on the Cohn Family Butterfly Pavilion, which is surrounded by Glass in Flight, a series of monumental pollinator sculptures by Tucson artist Alex Heveri. Heveri has more than 30 years of experience working with large-scale steel and glass, and these pieces depict butterflies, dragonflies, and hummingbirds. They were a gift to the Garden from Trustee Emeritus Cliff Douglas, and they're part of the Garden's Fall Experiences and family programming.
If you're not already familiar with the venue, the Desert Botanical Garden houses more than 50,000 plants across 4,800 species, including over 520 rare and endangered Sonoran Desert species. They also run research that turns desert science into solutions for heat and water, so there's a lot more going on here than just the displays.
