Concert by the instrumental post-rock band City of the Sun, featuring their Fall Tour, at the Crescent Ballroom in downtown Phoenix.
City of the Sun play the Crescent Ballroom on Monday, October 26, as part of their Fall Tour. They're an instrumental post-rock act from Brooklyn, New York, and this is a headlining date.
The band formed in 2011 and is fronted by guitarist John Pita and percussionist Zach Para. Their sound pulls from indie rock, American folk, flamenco and blues, and since there are no vocals, the focus stays on the playing. Critics have described it as worldly and cinematic, and have compared them to a cross between Rodrigo y Gabriela and Explosions in the Sky. That puts them somewhere between the rhythmic drive of Spanish guitar and the slow-build, atmospheric textures of post-rock.
They're playing the Crescent Ballroom at 308 N 2nd Ave in downtown Phoenix. The venue opened in 2011, when promoter Charlie Levy brought it to Second Avenue, and it's since become a downtown institution and a live-music hub credited with helping revive an area once considered a ghost town after dark. It's a 500-capacity concert hall with an adjacent cocktail lounge, sharp acoustics and bleacher-style seating, and it's hosted a wide range of genres over the last 14 years. It's turning 15 this year.
