Evening of Chindonya, a Japanese street performance tradition, by the all-female troupe Bentenya, with a sake experience at the Japanese Friendship Garden.
Bentenya are performing at the Japanese Friendship Garden on Sunday, October 25, as part of the Art & Sake series. They're an all-female troupe from Aichi, Japan, and they'll be performing Chindonya, a Japanese street performance tradition that dates back about 150 years. If you've never come across it, Chindonya is exactly what it sounds like: music meant for the street, not a concert hall, and Bentenya is keeping that tradition alive.
The setting fits the occasion. The Japanese Friendship Garden brings a piece of Japan to the desert, and it's built around the idea of understanding and cultural awareness between East and West. It sits inside Margaret T. Hance Park, right at the top of the I-10 Tunnel, so it's easy to find even if you're just passing through downtown. The garden itself is a quiet spot in the middle of the city, and that's where the evening takes place.
Along with the performance, there's a sake experience to round out the night. Between the Chindonya and the sake, it's a full evening centered on Japanese tradition, with the garden providing the backdrop. The whole thing is part of the Art & Sake series, so it's one of several events that combine art and sake throughout the season.
