An intimate classical music concert by the Timeless Resonance trio, featuring works by Bach, Stravinsky, Poulenc and Liszt, with a focus on Liszt's Totentanz.
Timeless Resonance brings Shadows and Fire to the Philadelphia Ethical Society on Saturday, October 24. It's an intimate concert by the ensemble's core trio: cellist Leigh Brown, flutist Gabe Preston, and pianist Anthony Passante Contaldi. The program is built around the contrast between shadow and light, austerity and exuberance, ritual and theatricality, and it moves through works by Bach, Stravinsky, and Poulenc.
At the center of the evening is the music of Franz Liszt, whose Romantic language pushes toward something both visceral and otherworldly. The concert builds toward his monumental Totentanz: Paraphrase on Dies Irae, a piece that draws on the ancient Dies Irae theme and transforms the medieval vision of death into a feverish, almost cinematic confrontation between the mortal and the eternal. The trio presents it as a piece of music for the changing seasons.
