New Year's Eve concert by The Philadelphia Orchestra with Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop, featuring works by Strauss, Tchaikovsky, and Piazzolla.
The Philadelphia Orchestra is ringing in the new year at Marian Anderson Hall, The Kimmel Center, on December 31, 2026. Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop returns to the podium for the New Year's Eve Celebration, a concert that runs about two hours including the intermission.
The program is a wide-ranging mix of waltzes, showpieces, and orchestral miniatures. It opens with J. Strauss Jr.'s Overture to Die Fledermaus, followed by 'Juba: Allegro' from his Symphony No. 3. From there, the set moves through Collins' Cowboy's Breakdown, Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker, and Piazzolla's Winter in Buenos Aires from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. The second half brings Waxman's Carmen Fantasy, R. Strauss' Suite from Der Rosenkavalier, and Enescu's Romanian Rhapsody No. 1.
Alsop is a familiar face here, returning as Principal Guest Conductor to lead the evening. The Guardian has described her as an "extraordinarily gifted, history-making conductor," and its critic called her work "a high-voltage, heart-on-sleeve performance, thrillingly played."
