Live show by Spite House, a Montreal trio mixing emo, punk and post-hardcore, at the First Unitarian Church.
Spite House play the First Unitarian Church on Tuesday, October 20. They're a Montreal trio working across emo, punk, and post-hardcore, and this is a single-bill night with them as the only act on the program.
Frontman Maxime Lajoie handles guitar and vocals, and he traces the band's start back to a specific, personal moment: an unexpected death that he says was the spark that led him to start singing in a band. He teamed up with Marc Tremblay, a former friend and schoolmate who took over drums, and together they built a writing rhythm they describe as drawing on Samiam, Jawbreaker, and Seaweed, but with a modern flair. The lineup came together as a trio when Nabil Ortega joined on bass.
If those names ring a bell, you've got a good sense of where they're coming from. Samiam, Jawbreaker, and Seaweed are all staples of the 90s emo and punk scene, and Spite House keeps that lineage in view while updating it for now. They've also put out an Audiotree session, so if you want to hear how they sound before you head out, that's a good place to start.
