Protomartyr, the Detroit post-punk band, play The First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia with support from J.R.C.G.
Protomartyr play The First Unitarian Church on Wednesday, November 11, with J.R.C.G. opening. They're a Detroit post-punk band fronted by vocalist Joe Casey, with guitarist Greg Ahee, drummer Alex Leonard and bassist Scott Davidson. Since their 2012 debut No Passion All Technique, they've built a reputation for caustic, impressionistic assemblages of politics and poetry.
Their sixth album, Formal Growth In The Desert, was recorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, with Ahee co-producing alongside Jake Aron. Frontman Joe Casey, now 45, lived in his family home in northwest Detroit until 2021, when a surge of break-ins prompted him to move out. He's called the record's centerpiece, "Graft Vs. Host," written in the wake of his mother's death, the heaviest song on the album. Ahee, who has scored short films, drew on the cinematic Spaghetti Western music of Ennio Morricone when shaping the record's sound.
