Jazz concert by saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins and his quartet, presented by Ars Nova Workshop as the closing night of Philly Music Fest.
Immanuel Wilkins and his quartet play Solar Myth on Sunday, October 18, as the closing night of Philly Music Fest. The concert is presented by Ars Nova Workshop, and it's a homecoming of sorts: Wilkins was raised in Upper Darby and has since become one of the defining saxophonists of his generation. He's a Juilliard alumnus who has worked with Jason Moran, Ambrose Akinmusire, Solange, Wynton Marsalis, and Joel Ross.
On alto saxophone, Wilkins leads a quartet that includes Micah Thomas on piano, Ryoma Takenaga on bass, and Kweku Sumbry on drums. The group works from a place of deep listening and collective improvisation, and they've built a singular language around it. Their recent trilogy, Live at the Village Vanguard, was described by writer Tina Campt as a "practice of improvisational sounding, congregational listening, and devotional ritual."
Ars Nova Workshop, the organization presenting the show, describes its own work as cultivating connection and curiosity through deep listening, improvisation, and joyous creative expression, with the goal of building a community of artists and audiences who find liberation and connection through creative music. This performance serves as the closing night of Philly Music Fest, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
